Malaysian Psychiatric Association (MPA) Press Statement on Covid-19 Pandemic and Movement Control Order (MCO) Impact on Mental Health
On 11th March 2020, the World Health Organization (WHO) has declared Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) as a pandemic. Since its first identification in Wuhan, China in December 2019, this disease has spread at an alarming rate throughout the world. The disease has not spared our country.
Since 18th March 2020, the Malaysian government introduced the Movement Control Order (MCO) to prevent further spread of the virus. With the increasing number of people affected by the disease daily, the MPA would like to emphasize the importance of recognizing the impact of the disease and the MCO on mental health. We want to state that a pandemic is not just a medical phenomenon; it also causes an indirect effect on theeconomy and mental health.
