The 20th PRCP Congress was held simultaneously with the 27th MCPM in Kuala Lumpur from October 13th to 15th, 2023.

This was the ninth time the MPA co-organised an international conference alongside a global association. The local central, scientific and organising committees were nervous yet excited about organising an important event.

About PRCP 2023

The Pacific Rim College of Psychiatry (PRCP), founded in 1980 in Manila by dedicated academic psychiatrists, stands as a vital association that unites distinguished mental health professionals from across the Asia-Pacific region. With a remarkable expansion over the years, the PRCP proudly includes members from a diverse array of countries, such as Australia, Canada, China, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, Papua New Guinea, Pakistan, Philippines, Singapore, South Korea, Taiwan, Thailand, and the USA. The expertise and insights of PRCP members, spanning clinical, administrative, and academic realms, significantly enhance the college’s activities and profoundly impact its mission to advance mental health care and literacy in the region.

The PRCP (Pacific Rim College of Psychiatrists) hopes to enhance mental health services in member countries while promoting psychiatric education and research through regional collaboration. One of its key objectives is to provide a formal setting for professional interaction. A significant activity of the PRCP is the organisation of biennial conferences, which serve as a platform for members to share knowledge and network.

The Malaysian Psychiatric Association has expressed confidence in delivering a valuable experience for delegates at the upcoming PRCP Congress in Kuala Lumpur, themed “Building Mental Health Resilience Across the Lifespan.” The primary goal of the congress is to strengthen continuing medical education in psychiatry. People’s mental health has been affected by the COVID-19 pandemic’s unparalleled disruption. It was also effectively conveyed the crux of global difficulties affecting humanity specifically in Asia Pacific. Over the three-day event, prominent international speakers will be invited to share their expertise, experiences, and research findings, fostering knowledge exchange and development within the field.

Prof Chee Ng and Prof Dr Ahmad Hatim Sulaiman were the PRCP/ MCPM 2023 conference co-chairpersons.

Professor Chee Ng is the Professor of Psychiatry at the University of Melbourne’s Department of Psychiatry. He is a Fellow of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists, Site Director of the WHO Collaborating Centre for Mental Health at St. Vincent’s Melbourne, and President-Elect of the Pacific Rim College of Psychiatrists.

For the conference, the MPA central committee invited the following speakers to speak during the plenary session.

  1. Prof Chee Ng (Australia)
  2. Prof Helen Hermann (Australia)
  3. Prof Kua Ee Hock (Singapore)
  4. Prof Leslie Citrome (USA)
  5. Prof Mian Yoon Chong (Taiwan)

The 20th Pacific Rim College of Psychiatrists (PRCP) and the 27th Malaysian Conference on Psychological Medicine (MCPM) conference were successful, gathering mental health professionals from across the Asia-Pacific region. Over 500 attendees were treated to a robust program that included 18 plenary sessions, three special lectures, three lunch symposiums, three oral presentation sessions, 19 symposiums, and 42 e-poster presentations, which kept the delegates actively engaged and enriched their experience.

The Malaysian Journal of Medicine and Health Sciences published the conference abstracts in December (Vol. 19 Supplement 15), adding significant value to the presenters’ contributions.  It can be accessed via link provided:

The organising committee extends its gratitude to the PRCP International Scientific Committee, thanks to Prof. Chee Ng and his team for entrusting the Malaysian Psychiatric Association (MPA) central committee with the privilege of organising the 20th PRCP in Kuala Lumpur.
